What is Japanese Rock and how did it start?

Japanese rock, or J-rock, is an eclectic genre of rock and roll music from Japan. It first started gaining prominence around the 1960s, a decade after the rise of western rock and roll. A lot of prominent western rock and roll influences include artists and bands such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. This heavy influence from western rock bands and mixture of Japanese music created a phenomenon called “Groups Sounds”.  Some of the most popular bands of this genre were the Tigers, the Tempters, the Spiders, the Mops, and the Golden Cups.

The rise of “Visual Kei”

In the 1980s, Japanese rock began to create a new separate style that would be later be called “Visual Kei,” named after the band, who popularized the style, X Japan’s motto, Psychedelic Violence – Crime of Visual Shock. The genre of Visual Kei was a combination of glam, pop-rock and punk. It was not only focused on its own music style but also heavily emphasized aesthetic through text, posters, covers and appearance. To compare it to western rock and roll, Visual Kei acts similar to a hard or alternative style of rock. It mixes many musical genres while also involving traditional Japanese music influences. Some of the bands of this genre are: X Japan, The Gazette, Dir en Grey, D and Buck-Tick.

Characteristics of Japanese Rock

While Japanese rock originally stemmed from western rock, there are a number of key differences that separate the two. For one thing, songs are more complex in regards to composition for things like guitar and keyboard lines. There is also more use of jazz elements in songs while also lacking “blues” elements that are more present in western rock. In terms of lyrics, Japanese rock devotes its lyrics to topics shared by many other Japanese pop songs such as: love, heartbreak or joy and are often quite simple to understand.
